Description

By giving to the Neighborhood Schools Program (NSP), you are supporting the academic success of South Side youth as well as employment and engagement opportunities for UChicago students who build lasting relationships as they bring their energy, enthusiasm, and fresh ideas to classrooms across the South Side.

In an effort to scale and enhance academic supports provided to local students from pre-K to 12th grade, we are featuring the NSP for Giving Tuesday 2023. Through the NSP, UChicago students have provided direct education and enrichment in local schools and communities since 1976. Our program now partners with 40 local schools and community sites on Chicago’s South Side with 300 University student employees and volunteers engaging more than 3,000 local youth each year.

Through the NSP’s core program, UChicago students add critical capacity to local schools, working as classroom assistants and in administrative support roles. They also offer individualized tutoring and after-school homework help through Maroon Tutor Match (MTM) and the recently launched Homework Help Center.

Through the NSP’s Jumpstart initiative, teams of UChicago students provide language, literacy, and social-emotional programming for preschool children in the Woodlawn community. Since 2012, UChicago students have supported preschool classrooms and teachers through twice-weekly enrichment sessions where they engage the preschoolers in small groups, reading books, playing games, and learning vocabulary.

Donations are applied to...

Your gift will help the Neighborhood Schools Program to respond to the growing demand for education supports and tutoring services on the South Side while providing UChicago students with flexible, meaningful work opportunities.

1.  A gift of $1,008 to NSP will provide one-on-one tutoring for a South Side Chicago Public Schools student for a full academic year (three hours of tutoring for seven weeks each quarter).

2. A gift of $336 will provide two 30-minute tutoring sessions each week for a full academic year for a South Side Chicago Public Schools student through our Homework Help Center (one hour of tutoring for seven weeks each quarter).

3. A gift of $16 to the NSP will enable a UChicago student to provide one hour of classroom assistance at a local preschool or elementary school through our NSP core and Jumpstart programs.

Why are donations necessary?

Recent studies substantiate the COVID-19 pandemic’s negative impact on K12 learning and the especially steep learning loss for students from low-income families, which have further widened opportunity and achievement gaps. Programs like the NSP, Maroon Tutor Match, and the Homework Help Center can help address learning loss by providing targeted direct support to local students and classrooms.

Your donation, at any level, will help ensure that local students receive the support they need to stay on track academically.
